Do You Still Dream?

Hey guys welcome back. In my last post I talked about how people reacted to me not wanting to take over the family business. To see the full post you can go here

I ended it by talking about how I was really motivated by Jim Rohn to start dreaming again. For the majority of years after graduating High School, and going a few years of College, I pretty much knew what my future was going to look like.

Run the family business.

By now you should know that I recently decided to go a different route..

My regular circle of friends wanted nothing to do with that. They were so comfortable with where they were, it got to the point where I couldn’t really be around them much.

You would be surprised on how hard it was to find people who still had a dream in life. Who thought differently. Someone who understood the concept that in order for them to get where they wanted to get, they had to change their mindset.

I remember hearing an audio where Jim Rohn said these exact words “You are an average of the 5 people you spend most of your time with”

This hit me like a brick wall. I started to think about the people who I was hanging out with, and could instantly figure out why I was having issues moving forward with my mindset.

This led me to look for networking events or groups in my area where I could meet like minded people. It took some time, actually a good amount of time.

The group was of about 10 people which really made it cool since it was pretty intimate. One of the guys there, I felt really resonated with my personality. He was a local business owner who had started a local Pest Control company, you can actually check out his site www.pestcontrolmcallentexas.com .After the meetup. I went up to him and asked what made him start his own company.

You Are Crazy Not To Take Over The Business!

This is the response i got from every single person I told I didn’t want to take over the family business.

You see our family business has always been what we are known for. It’s been around for the last 20 years.

It is something that was just going to happen. My dad retire, then I would take it over.

The thing is, like I mentioned in my first post, was I really thought it was boring and couldn’t really see myself doing this for the next 20 years or however many it would be.

You see, anytime you hear someone having their own business, you would think ” oh they must have a lot of money”

At least that’s what my friends thought and told me growing up.

They would say things like “Oh man, must be nice that your family owns a business, you probably get whatever you want”

. and early on, we did make a lot of money. But after awhile, the business slowed down. A LOT.

and I saw the struggle for my dad. How he felt like he wasn’t able to provide for the family. I don’t think there are much more things in this world that are worse for a man.

The feeling that you can’t provide for your family is horrible.

Fast forward to recent times, and the business is doing a little better, but nothing like we used to do.

It pays the bills. and that is it.

Honestly, it is just like working a regular job.

Why would i want to do that?

Now I am not knocking on people with jobs so please don’t think that.

All I am saying is that I want something better for my life.

That is WHAT I WANT.

As I also mentioned in my last post.

One person who really opened up my eyes to a different way of thinking is Jim Rohn.

He taught me that if i wanted life to be different, I had to be different. I had to do different things in order to have a better life.

I couldn’t expect to keep doing the same things over and over again, and expect a different result.

At first, I didn’t really understand what he meant by that.

I would think to myself..

“So you are telling me that all I have to do is think differently and I will get what I want?”

That didn’t make sense to me in the beginning.

And why would it? My thinking was all messed up!

So the first thing I had to work on was my “mindset”

I had to understand how to control my thoughts.

Think about it…

As kids we are told we can do whatever we want to be, but as soon as we get a little older..

Now people are telling us to be safe and smart and just go with the sure thing.

From the moment I heard Jim Rohn say that I could be more. That I could still dream..

I was all in.

Thanks for stopping by and see you on my next post!

My Story

Hey guys, so today I want to talk a little about who I am. My name is Matt and I am a 32 year old who lives in Utah. My father, who runs a vinyl window business, at one point was ready to give the business to me. However, its not something that I wanted to do forever. I can remember ever since i was small working in the family business, and telling myself, “this is boring”

But, it gave me a little bit of money to buy shoes, which I am a huge fan of. I guess you can call me a sneakerhead. I’ll tell you guys about my collection in another post.

Anyway, sometime last year, we were sitting down around the dinner table at our Sunday family dinner. and my dad brought up the topic of him retiring..

the conversation when something like this..

“So guys,as you may or may not know, I am getting a little older” (my dad is pretty sarcastic)

“And I think its time for me to pass over the reigns of Vinyl Windows Specialist Co to one of you”.

Now me being the oldest of 3, all being boys, I knew he was talking directly to me.

I said “Well Dad, I’ve been thinking, and I think i want to go into a different career.”

as you can imagine he was shocked.

you see over the last couple years. I’ve been feeling like there is something better out there for me. Not saying the family business isn’t great. It always pays the bills, and then some. But me personally, I want more. I want to be more. This led me to coming online and looking at other options.

At first i thought, maybe I’ll go back to school. But honestly, that was just never really my thing. I got decent grades, but i just couldn’t sit there while the professor taught me on things that I was not going to need in the real world.

One night while online, I came across Jim Rohn.

I’m not exactly sure what I was searching, but oh man, I’m glad I did.

It was like he was talking to me.

Directly to me. He said something like “If you aren’t willing to risk the unusual, you will have to settle for ordinary.”

This HIT me!

I knew that I needed to make changes in my life.

Ever since that night, I have become a student of Jim Rohn.

I want to use this blog to show you how he has impacted my life, and how he can do the same for you.

Follow me on this journey!

To Our Success, Matt.
